PSHE

“It is vital that when educating our children’s brains, we do not neglect to educate their hearts.”  Dalai Lama

Our intent at Mount Nod is to provide every child with an education that prepares them for life's opportunities and challenges. What we teach in the classroom will help our pupils foster lifelong aspirations, goals and values. It's a chance to give every child and young person an equal opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge they need to thrive now and in the future. This includes helping them to deal with critical issues they face every day such as friendships, emotional wellbeing and change. We start every year with work on protective behaviours and rights and responsibitlites to embed key skills that will provide them with a solid foundation for whatever challenging opportunities lie ahead. We follow a scheme of work created by the PSHE association.

"The non-academic skills and attributes acquired through PSHE education – often termed ‘character’ – have a positive impact on life chances as well as being key to boosting the employability of school-leavers and improving social mobility."   James Heckman - Nobel winner

We are proud of our PSHE work and lessons are designed and delivered according to the latest government guidance. Our curriculum is based around advice from the PSHE Association and children learn around three themes (one per term):

  • Relationships
  • Living in the Wider World
  • Health and Wellbeing

PSHE lessons empower our pupils to think carefully about the world around them, as well as how to interact and build relationships with others. Children are encouraged to make their own informed choices and behave in a safe and respectful manner, listening to others and considering the feelings of their peers as well as themselves.

Our work on relationships and living in the wider world, in the Autumn and Spring terms, prepare children for the work on health and wellbeing in Summer. This culminates in our annual Health and Wellbeing week in July, where children can participate in a wide range of activities. This includes dance and yoga sessions, a variety of sports, mindfulness and other health lessons throughout the week.

“Do not judge me by my successes, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up.”  Nelson Mandela

We are lucky to have a host of visitors during the year to support our PSHE lessons, such as representatives from animal charities, medical experts and environmental speakers who all deliver exciting sessions with children across the Key Stages.

In the summer term, all pupils receive age-appropriate Relationship and Sex Education lessons. We follow the Christopher Winters scheme of work for these lessons and parents are fully consulted about the content. At Mount Nod we believe strongly that statutory RSE lessons are invaluable for preparing children for the responsibilities of adult life, and all safeguarding procedures are followed.
