Geography

Our intent is to inspire in children, a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people which will remain with them for the rest of their lives. We want to promote their interest and understanding of diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of Earth’s key physical and human processes. As pupils progress through school, their growing knowledge about the world should help them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and the formation and use of landscapes and environments.

Throughout the carefully planned and engaging curriculum, pupils learn about their local area and look at similarities and differences between a region of the United Kingdom, a region in a European country and a region within in North or South America. They learn how to draw and interpret maps, and develop the skills of research, investigation and analysis of geographical information. We provide a high-quality Geography curriculum, using the National Curriculum and the Chris Quigley Milestones, to ensure full curriculum coverage and progression. Our pupils are given real life experiences through visits and visitors coming in to school where they will learn about real life applications of geography and about careers. They have the opportunity to use a variety of data such as statistics, graphs, pictures and photographs, and they use ICT in lessons where it enhances their learning. Where possible, we make cross curricular links and involve the children in practical activities, such as local field trips, use of the outdoor space, observing and discovering the outdoors and using geographical equipment. We also embrace national and worldwide Geography based days such as Earth Day.

Our Geography curriculum ensures that children have the opportunity to explore, develop, demonstrate and apply geographical knowledge and skills, while enhancing their learning experience and deepening understanding. This is monitored through discussions, outcomes of tasks, formative assessment such as quizzes, discussions and questions in class. Pupils talk enthusiastically about Geography in our school and are encouraged and able to use acquired vocabulary.
